The Industry 5.0 Award recognises EU-funded projects that make an outstanding contribution to building a more human-centric, sustainable and resilient European industry. This could be by means of developing innovative technologies, industrial or supply chain processes, new business models, or by advancing the understanding of human-centricity, sustainability and resilience in industry.

The ongoing NUMERICS PhD project focuses on "numerical simulation and scientific computing" as transversal research activities. Targeting 50 international fellowships for PhD projects taking place in CEA laboratories it strongly contributes to the development of European research and human resource capacities as well as knowledge transfer between academic, research institutions and industry. In this regard, NUMERICS aims at strengthening the development and innovation of EU industries in many competitive areas impacted by numerical simulation, e.g. energy, transport, health, climate.

Research results achieved so far from NUMERICS individual PhD projects at CEA can already be predicted to have important social, economic and environmental impacts in crucial domains such as materials for the future, climate studies, personalized health devices and innovative therapies for disabled. Out of 44 PhD subjects finally included in the NUMERICS projects, we have pointed out the interest of the research of 3 PhD candidates that particularly address the Industry 5.0 Award criteria:

  1. "Development of a lifetime estimation methodology for electric vehicles Li-ion batteries", PhD candidate: Marc Haber.
  2. "Artificial intelligence for real-time decoding of motor commands from ECoG of disabled subjects for chronic brain computer interfacing", PhD candidate: Maciej Śliwowski.

"Numerical methods for an autonomous personalized device for monitoring transpired gases", PhD candidate: Maria-Paula Comsa.
